MENTORS Are Back: 'Over The Top' New Album On The Way

November 23, 2004

One of the most controversial of metal bands of all time — the MENTORS — have made a return. Band leader El Duce was killed in 1997 by a train, just days after being filmed for a conspiracy-theory film alleging he had been hired as a hitman to execute Kurt Cobain. The remaining members, guitarist Sickie Wifebeater and bassist Dr. Heathen Scum, have assembled an all-new-look MENTORS. New members are vocalist El Rapo, drummer Moosedick and rhythm guitarist Sickie J. The latter recently spoke to Rockdetector.com about the group's forthcoming album.

Rockdetector.com: Apparently there is a new record on the way. When and where was the album recorded? Are you cutting this yourselves or is a label or producer involved?

Sickie J.: "The abum was wrote and sketched out in early 2004 as a group effort by all. When writing this new material, both Sickie [Wifebeater] and Dr. Heathen Scum brought songs to the drawing board, and we as a band, constructed them in a Seattle based recording studio, but before we could finish all basic tracks, MENTORS were in direct violation with the studio's code of conduct, so to speak, and were booted out by the third day of tracking. I guess we were a little too lewd and crude for the owner's liking. We then moved the project down to Los Angeles in late summer 2004 to finish the record with legendary metal engineer Bill Metoyer, who is no stranger to MENTORS. He recorded the Metal Blade MENTORS releases 'You Axed For It' and 'Up The Dose'. The new album is in the final stages of being mixed and should be available by early 2005."

Rockdetector.com: Does the album have a title or record company set?

Sickie J.: "Well, both those questions I cannot answer at this time, sorry to say. We are too lazy to put forth that kind of energy at this time, but I assure you it will have a title and will be on some label when it comes out. The idea of 'Over the Top' has been tossed around relating to the over the top lifestyles that the MENTORS lead."

Rockdetector.com: Dare I ask what kind of song content fans can expect from this album?

Sickie J.: "We take to heart that we are a hetro rockin' band and write about hetro things that will relate to any hetro rocking man/lady including: booze guzzling, pill popping and anything that resembles the fact that we will rise up above and beyond all this sissy shit rock that is coming out now. The world needs a new MENTORS record, and what the world wants they will get very soon."
